Servant Leadership

As we celebrate Veterans Day, Catholic schools have a unique opportunity to reflect on and honor the sacrifices of our nation's veterans. This day of gratitude reminds us of values that resonate deeply with Catholic education: service, commitment to others, and a dedication to a higher purpose. We are servant leaders forming future generations of servant leaders.

“Like good stewards of the manifold grace of God, serve one another with whatever gift each of you has received. Whoever speaks must do so as one speaking the very words of God; whoever serves must do so with the strength that God supplies, so that God may be glorified in all things through Jesus Christ. To him belong the glory and the power forever and ever. Amen.” (1 Peter 4:10-11)

Veterans Day highlights the selflessness of those who have served, defending freedom and working toward a peaceful future for all. In a similar way, Catholic education is founded on the values of self-sacrifice, service, and commitment. Students learn that their talents and education are gifts meant to be shared generously with the world. This focus on service forms students to become people for others, shaping them to be servant leaders with hearts attuned to the needs of those around them.

“In all this I have given you an example that by such work we must support the weak, remembering the words of the Lord Jesus, for he himself said, ‘It is more blessed to give than to receive.’ ” (Acts 20:35)

A Catholic education goes beyond academic achievement, nurturing students’ understanding of community and responsibility. By studying the lives of saints, Church teachings, and stories from the Gospels, students see examples of men and women who devoted their lives to God and others. This aligns closely with the service of our veterans, who embody the Gospel call to love one’s neighbor as oneself.

Catholic schools foster in students a desire to serve and make a difference, equipping them with the tools to answer their own call. Veterans Day, then, becomes not just a day to honor the past but an inspiration for the future, encouraging each student to carry forward a legacy of servant leadership.

“In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven.” (Matthew 5:16)

This Veterans Day, as we honor those who have served, Catholic schools are blessed with the chance to teach students that they, too, are called to a life that puts love, faith, and service above self. Together, we thank our veterans for their example and commit ourselves to living lives that honor their sacrifice.
